I am so excited to be writing this blog and letting you know all about the new hypnobirthing offering here at Angela Marshall Acupuncture in Brisbane. As a mum of four, I am so passionate about women’s health and in particular the journey from womb to world as I like to call it. From fertility to conception and birthing your beautiful bundle of joy into this world. Hypnobirthing aligns beautifully with the work I do with acupuncture and acupressure, as it is about using the mind to allow the body to do what it inherently knows to do during birth, but what modern medicine has changed so much. It is about coming back to our essence as women and harnessing our mindset to create a positive birthing experience.
What is hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing is about providing you and your birthing partner with the confidence, knowledge and tools to assist you to focus the mind and let go of any fears. So that you can feel empowered to be able to achieve a positive calm birthing experience, whether it be a natural or caesarean birth. As I always say where the mind goes the body follows. When you feel prepared, calm and focussed it assists you to feel more in control throughout all stages of labour.
Hypnobirthing will provide you with various tools from self-hypnosis to acupressure, visualisation, breathing and relaxation techniques, to assist you in creating an empowered, positive mindset. It also involves your birthing partner as well, so that they too can also feel confident in supporting you throughout the entire birthing experience. Hypnobirthing draws on the very latest evidence-based research and combines it with practical tools and knowledge to help you and your birthing partner to feel ready and confident to meet your new baby.
As a mother I know first-hand what it is like to have a birthing experience that feels out of your control, to feel worried, anxious and overwhelmed. I am truly passionate about assisting my clients to feel supported, guided and equipped with the tools, knowledge and confidence to assist them in creating a birthing experience that they will want to remember. To drop out of that place of worry and fear and into a relaxed, calm and positive mindset. Not only do I offer hypnobirthing classes here in Brisbane, but I also interweave these tools and techniques into my acupuncture sessions.
I also provide my clients with guidance around listening to their own bodies, understanding what rest is needed, the right supportive nutrition that will also assist them and ultimately how to tune into what the body is saying when it is prepared for birth. A healthy calm body goes a long way in creating the space to allow for a positive birthing experience.
Benefits of hypnobirthing
In acupuncture I refer a lot to the body and its innate wisdom in knowing exactly what to do when it is relaxed and in alignment. Hypnobirthing is about creating a safe and supportive place for you to learn to trust your body, to focus the mind and to drop into that state of relaxation and alignment that will allow the body to follow. It really focuses on giving you the knowledge and tools to be able to achieve your desired positive birthing experience. And to feel empowered to make the choices that are right for you rather than being told what your birth should look like.
What does it involve?
Over a number of weeks hypnobirthing will provide you with the latest evidence-based research as well as a holistic approach, tools and knowledge to create a positive birthing experience, whether it be a natural or caesarean birth. One of the core skills that is taught throughout the course is ‘self-hypnosis.’ In essence this is just a very deep state of pure relaxation, a place where you can feel in control and let go of any fears. When we feel calmer and in control our body will naturally drop into alignment and flow which in turn will assist you to manage labour and to feel confident to make your own birthing choices.
Alongside self-hypnosis we will also explore acupressure, visualisation, relaxation, meditation and breathing techniques to assist you in feeling calm, confident and in control before, during and after birth. Each class offers valuable and practical information, the latest evidence-based research and skills for both you and your birthing partner, so that you both will feel confident in managing the various stages of labour.
When should I start hypnobirthing?
Ideally although you can start hypnobirthing at any time, I recommend the ideal time is between 20 and 30 weeks. As this will allow you the time to develop your knowledge and skills, to practice what you learn, and also ensure the information remains front of mind when you go into labour. Combined with acupuncture hypnobirthing will create a supportive space for you to feel in control of your pregnancy and labour.
Hypnobirthing classes Brisbane
Aligned with Hypnobirthing Australia, utilising the Positive Birth Program I will be offering small intimate hypnobirthing classes of no more than six couples from my clinic here in Mansfield, Brisbane. During the classes you will be provided with content, resources and hands-on practical tools and techniques to really help you and your partner feel comfortable, in control, empowered and ready for the birth of your baby. I am a big believer in having support and the idea of creating a village around you as you step into the world of parenthood. Through small intimate classes you will not only learn the techniques of hypnobirthing, but also have the opportunity to connect with other couples and be able to share your experiences and journey.
