Fire Cupping therapy is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that uses glass cups and a flame to create a vacuum-like feeling over large muscle groups of the body, generally cupping is done on the back, legs, chest and abdomen.
Once the suction has occurred, the cups can be gently moved across the skin (often referred to as “gliding cupping”). Massage oils are sometimes applied to improve movement of the glass cups along the skin. The suction in the cups causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be lightly drawn into the cup. Cupping is much like the opposite of massage – rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle pressure to pull them upward. For most patients, this is a very relaxing sensation. Once suctioned, the cups are generally left in place for about ten minutes while the patient relaxes.
Cupping is traditionally used in many cultures for a wide variety of ailments, including muscle pain, soreness, inflammation, migraines, cramps and anxiety. It is also traditionally used for digestive conditions, as well as respiratory diseases.
It’s important to consider the side effects of this treatment as cupping often leaves red, purplish marks.
Following the treatment, avoid showers, working out and exposure to the sun for at least two hours.
